'Gadis Kretek' and Its Unforgettable Soundtrack

Yash, the 'Gadis Kretek' series, is adapted from the historical fiction novel with the same title by Ratih Kumala, and this series is directed by Kamila Andini and Ifa Isfansyah. This series, set in Indonesia during the post-Dutch colonial era, stars well-known Indonesian actors and actresses such as Ario Bayu as Soeraja, Dian Sastrowardoyo as Jeng Yah, Arya Saloka as Lebas, and Putri Marino as Arum Cengkeh.
‘Gadis Kretek’ is a novel inspired by family business. This novel by Ratih Kumala, published in 2012, was included in the top ten recipients of the 2012 Kusala Sastra Khatulistiwa Award. This series tells the story of the owner of the Kretek Djagad Raja factory, who is dying. His last request was to meet Jeng Yah, a woman who had been his love in the past. Lebas tried to find Jeng Yah's whereabouts in remote areas of Java. They managed to uncover several secrets and found out the origins of why Kretek Djagad Raja became the number one kretek in Indonesia. From there, Mr. Soeraja's children learned the relationship between Jeng Yah and their father.
Not only can the storyline bring us to experience every scene in this series, but the soundtrack sung by Nadin Amizah also succeeds in bringing us into the setting presented in this series. She covered the song Kala Sang Surya Tenggelam, popularized by Chrisye.
Quoting from various sources, this is the first time Nadin Amizah has provided a series soundtrack. Even though she felt pressured by this project, Nadin managed to fill in the Gadis Kretek soundtrack with her beautiful voice with the support of the entire production team.
Not only does Kala Sang Surya Tenggelam provide the background music for this series, but there are also many beautiful songs by talented Indonesian musicians, such as Reality Club, Kelompok Penerbang Roket, Daramuda, Feby Putri, and many more.
